The Abuse of Masculine Strength

Masculine strength is an undeniably unique design to the male by God for the good of others. Many would cringe at and dispute this statement because of how men have used and abused their strength. This abuse, however, is not a reason to do away with masculinity all together, but to see masculine strength redeemed and used for the purposes God intended.

Cunningham describes, “Masculinity is like fire. Yes, without proper constraints it can cause unrivaled devastation, burn an entire civilization to the ground. But properly ordered fire gives life to civilization. The solution is not to put out the flame of masculinity to avoid its destruction. The solution is accepting nothing less from this generation of men than properly ordered, morally constrained masculinity.”

Men’s Strength: Intended for Good

How we use our unique strength matters. There is a theological design for this biological reality. Our strength is designed to be used selflessly for the good of others.

The fall has corrupted this design and we now distinguish “real men” from “good men”. While we desire in our hearts to be good men, the world has taught us that “real men”, who use their strength selfishly to protect and promote themselves at the cost of others, get ahead and succeed.

Lord, our world needs more good men! Help us and redeem our unique strength to be used for the good of others and Your glory!

Reflection

  1. How have you used your strength selflessly? How have you been selfish with your strength?
  2. Do you see your value and worth in being a good man or in being the world’s definition of a “real man”?
