If the whole of this series could be summed up, it is in that God has designed the unique strengths of masculinity for the good of others. This of course is true of God’s design for men and women alike, but we have been exploring the specific woes of a selfish masculinity versus a masculinity that is compelled by Christ’s selflessness.
Cunningham asks and answers, “Christian manhood and cultural manhood starkly depart when we ask this question, what is the purpose of manhood? The only acceptable answer for the Christian man is that my masculinity, my strength, my courage, my ambition, my gifts, my valor, all of who I am as a man does not primarily exist for me, but it is a gift I offer to others.”
Continuing a theme from last week, we can believe the self improvement lie, but that leaves us living a life in front of a mirror looking at our betterment for our own means instead of looking around to the world that is starving, not for more self-absorbed, productive, “real” men, but good men that have been redeemed by the work of Christ and have submitted to Him as Lord that now pour their lives out as an offering to serve their families and communities.
In this concluding episode, let us listen intently and wrestle with these questions:
